„Letters as a Jewellery“

Exhibition of artworks by members of the Finnish Calligraphy Society.

Briefly about the exhibition.
The Finnish Calligraphy Society celebrated its 20th anniversary last year.
The theme “Letters as a Jewellery” was chosen not just by chance – it was premised on the idea that the theme would visually illustrate 20 creative years of Society, enabling members to freely implement different tools, colours, and materials in their artworks, choosing various themes and motives.
20 artworks of calligraphy, along with the best wishes of 10 authors from Finland will be presented for the audience’s attention in Klaipeda!

Calligraphy does not have a very deep tradition in Finland and there are several reasons for this. On the one hand, all written documents in Finland that date back to the Middle Ages are in Latin, Swedish and German. On the other hand, Finnish writing skills and writing culture developed rather slowly for economic reasons – not everyone who wanted to had the opportunity to attend a school. Only in 1921, The Law of Compulsory Education, ffectively involved Finns in universal literacy education.
Calligraphy as a learning discipline has been taught in Finland since 2011. Veiko Kespersaks a resident of London,    who is well-known in Scandinavia and other countries, has been teaching calligraphy for almost 25 years in Finland.
Satakunta University was the only Higher education institution in the Nordic countries which offered professional calligraphy studies. Unfortunately, calligraphy as a discipline has not been taught at the Satakunta university since 2016.
The Finnish Calligraphy Society, led by calligrapher Pauliina Yliniitty, has taken the initiative to return the discipline of calligraphy to the process of formal education.    It was on the initiative of this Society that a working group was formed in 2020 to prepare a formal Calligraphy study. program.
